Abstract:
This dissertation examines the role of excess in the accounts of language and subjectivity in the work of Emmanuel Levinas and Jean-François Lyotard and suggests that this concept also affects the way in which we engage with post-genocide representations. It argues that by reconfiguring our understanding of post-genocide aesthetics, we can revolutionize the way these representations are taken up in public memory in order to make spaces of memory more open and inclusive.
